New Resource to Find Local Food Pantries Released

The Mid-Shore Health Improvement Coalition has released a new Food Pantry Calendar. The Calendar, which is available on the Coalition’s website, provides an easy to navigate resource to locate food pantries in the mid-shore region.

Food pantries are available throughout the mid-shore region every day of the week. The calendar provides the names, locations, hours, and contact information for each food pantry. The calendar can be viewed in multiple formats and is searchable. The Coalition recommends that users of the calendar contact the food pantry location before visiting to confirm hours, eligibility requirements, and distribution procedures.

“We know that food insecurity is a major issue on the mid-shore,” said Caroline County Health Officer Robin Cahall. “Helping people have access to nutritious food is a part of the Coalition’s work to promote healthy living and prevent diseases like diabetes.”

All jurisdictions in Maryland have Local Health Improvement Coalitions to address pressing health issues. In 2021, the five mid-shore counties banded together to share knowledge and leverage scarce resources. They started by first addressing the prevention and management of diabetes and have since expanded to focus on additional regional priorities. Their current workgroups include Diabetes/Healthy Living, Health Equity/Social Determinants of Health, Tobacco/Cancer, Telehealth, Health Literacy, and Provider Recruitment and Retention. Funding for the Coalition’s efforts come from the Maryland Department of Health.
